Substance/Alcohol Misuse Prevention
Take Action!

The Healthy Communities Partnership: Lanark, Leeds and Grenville has identified two recommended actions, for our communities, in each of the priority areas:

Healthy Communities Partnership

The Lanark County and Town of Smiths Falls Municipal Drug Strategy (MDS) Committee

Our VISION for Substance and Alcohol Misuse Prevention in Lanark County is that all community members have a responsible attitude towards alcohol and other drugs, and the community supports skills and knowledge for healthy decision making and risk reduction.

MISSION STATEMENT: We want to encourage communication and collaboration across the Four Pillars to meet the needs of Lanark County.

Background

The Municipal Drug Strategy started as a community concern – many agencies saw the impacts of drugs on individuals, families and the community. Two town hall meeting were held early 2009 and a leadership group was formed to move us to implementation. The leadership group, after research, determined that a Municipal Drug Strategy was the best fit in our rural community. This group presented at Lanark County council and to each local municipality to ask them…

“To establish a local Municipal Drug Strategy (MDS) Committee as a Standing Committee of the Municipality of.......to address alcohol and other drug problems through community communication and collaboration.”

The strategy incorporates the evidenced-based, “4 Pillar” approach. It recognized that dedicated attention must be paid along the continuum of prevention, harm reduction, treatment and enforcement.

A Framework for Action includes the four pillars of prevention, treatment, enforcement and harm reduction. Each requires the interaction and support of the other three to help the framework improve the overall well-being of the community.
